System Center Orchestrator 2012: Main changes introduced with respect to Opalis 6.3

System Center Orchestrator 2012 It is the successor of Opalis 6.3 the product that helps automate and integrate the management of their IT infrastructure.

Compared to its predecessor the product has not been completely revised, but introduces some very interesting news:

  • New installation process: in a short time you can have your product powered setup that guides so simple in installation choices. Very convenient also check that checks for all necessary prerequisites. Respect to Opalis this is definitely a significant improvement taking into account all the steps that it was necessary to follow to complete the installation;
  • New web-based management console: the new Operator Orchestrator Console is based on IIS and uses Silverlight technology. Through the web console you can monitor and control the execution of Runbook using an effective interface. In Opalis 6.3 the console was based entirely on Java and used Open Source components;
  • New Web Service: Thanks to new Web service, where land requests adhere to the standard ODATA, is made available a powerful tool of integration with the product;
  • New provider PowerShell: qThis provider PowerShell allows you to establish communication with Orchestrator and govern its functions such as gestire remotely Runbook;
  • New Activities Standard available: the set of tasks for creating runbooks already present by default in Orchestrator has been expanded so you can immediately start building workflow without the need to install additional Integration Pack.

Theauthoring experience and interface of Orchestrator than Opalis is basically the same, but it's good to keep in mind the following differences in terminology used (same concepts, new terminologies):

  • Policies in Opalis are called Runbooks in Orchestrator;
  • Foundation Objects Opalis is now called Standards Activities in Orchestrator.

Orchestrator unlike Opalis does not provide support for the datastore on Oracle but only on SQL Server.
